Apple Cake with Caramel Butter Sauce
This hearty autumn-inspired apple cake recipe combines apples, walnuts and spices and is served with a rich, buttery homemade caramel sauce.

How to make

STEP 1
Heat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour 13x9-inch baking pan; set aside.

Combine flour, 3/4 cup brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, baking powder, nutmeg, salt and baking soda in bowl. Add melted butter, milk, eggs and 2 teaspoons vanilla. Beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often, until well mixed. Stir in apples and walnuts.

Spread batter into prepared pan. Bake 35-40 minutes or until top springs back when touched lightly in center. Cool completely.

Just before serving, combine 3/4 cup brown sugar, whipping cream and 3 tablespoons butter in 1-quart saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, 3-4 minutes or until sugar is dissolved. Stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla. Drizzle sauce over each piece of cake. Dollop with whipped cream, if desired.
